I've since gone on Youtube to have a look at other players' experience with the fight (I was particularly interested in seeing other people attempt it without foreknowledge it's generally a massacre) and it's pretty clear that bringing a Man At Arms to the fight and having him use Defender to constantly guard the bomb target and almost nullify its damage is *the* optimal strategy. So obviously, I did win, but that could easily have gone the other way, and I'm not sure whether I actually ended up being lucky (in the "probably shouldn't have won" sense) or unlucky (quite a few bad rolls early on) overall. That was kind of a bummer, since I didn't want to go into a unique encounter with a strategy based on information I couldn't have gathered within the game that's why I decided to *not* bring a Man At Arms, and instead brought what I felt was a solid, fairly well-rounded party of Leper, Highwayman, Plague Doctor and Vestal - the kind I might have brought along if I had no idea what to expect. Obviously, I put those two bits of info together and got a good idea of how the fight would work and what the optimal strategy would involve (and it turns out I was pretty much spot on). Now, I always do my best to avoid spoilers for the special encounters/dungeons like Wolves at the Door or the Darkest Dungeon missions, but I had already heard (or rather, read) multiple people say that the encounter was significantly easier with a Man At Arms, and I also knew that it involved bombs that dealt tons of damage. The fight was awesome, just as brutal as I was expecting based on the way people talked about it online, and it was the second time I ever felt genuinely worried I'd get a party wipe (the first being a very ill-advised Shambler fight on my first Veteran dungeon run). Incidentally, I got a bunch of new achiements after the fight, including the ones for the first death to a Heart Attack and for beating a boss with one hero remaining. So, yesterday t fought Vvulf for the very first time and *just* barely won (by which I mean that by the time the fight was over I had one virtuous - Courageous - Highwayman on death's door remaining, while my Leper, Vestal and Plague Doctor had all become afflicted and died.
